What is child life?
Child life is a field that focuses on the psychosocial wellbeing of infants, children, youth and families impacted by illness, injury, death, and grief. Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) are credentialed allied healthcare professionals who work in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, hospice organizations, and more.

Child Life Specialists use child-friendly language, therapeutic play, and developmentally appropriate education to help infants, children, youth and families navigate stressful experiences. Child Life Specialists work to ensure that children’s emotional and developmental needs are not overlooked when faced with illness, injury, trauma, and loss.

CCLS must adhere to the Child Life Code of Ethics and follow the Standards of Clinical Practice as outlined by the Association of Child Life Professionals and the Child Life Certification Commission.
